In the mid-nineteenth century, many Germans immigrated to Texas and not only created a culture of their own but also made important contributions to Texas culture. With Dr. Kenneth Hafertepe, Chair of the Department of Museum Studies at Baylor, this class will examine German Texan culture through the material things they left behind. First, we will consider their houses made of log, stone, or using the German technique known as fachwerk. Next, we’ll delve into furniture  in the neoclassical Biedermeier style and designs for courthouses and other public meeting places. And the course wouldn’t be complete without a look at churches and graveyards!

Join Sara Dye, a Baylor doctoral candidate in English, to explore the many ways that story-sharing helps foster empathy and connection between people. We will then discuss how story-telling can be incorporated into advocacy efforts—whether informal (for yourself, a friend, or family member) or formal (for a client, patient, or community member). Story-based advocacy is often not only more effective than other types of advocacy, but it is also often more ethical. Our time together will, of course, include a lot of story-sharing.
