“Perspectives on the Causes of Poverty” – Dr. Linda English, Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics at Baylor University, will introduce several explanations for the existence of poverty, highlight evidence supporting each of these explanations, and discuss the role that mental models of poverty plays in poverty alleviation efforts. “Baylor Freedom School” – Dr. Lakia Scott, Assistant Professor of Urban Education and Literacy in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at Baylor University, will share the importance of culturally relevant and affirming literacy practices for diverse learners and how these practices can impact future success. In the summer of 2017, Dr. Scott directed Baylor’s first Freedom School, a summer literacy program that aimed to curb summer learning loss for students from traditionally marginalized backgrounds. Children’s Defense Fund Freedom Schools provide summer enrichment through a research-based, multicultural education curriculum that supports children and families. Dr. Scott will share findings from the first year of CDF Freedom Schools at Baylor and plans for continued program development. You are welcome to bring your own lunch (lunch is not provided). Please register by October 11th.

“The Wellness Center: An Academic-Practice Partnership to Improve Community Health” – Dr. Kelly Ylitalo and Dr. Jackson Griggs present on their collaborative work to gather pilot data to inform the Family Health Center’s Community Wellness Center, an innovative strategy that integrates primary care and community health prevention to improve health outcomes. Dr. Ylitalo, PhD, is Assistant Professor of Epidemiology in Baylor’s Robbins College of Health and Human Sciences. Dr. Jackson Griggs, MD, is Associate Program Director of the Waco Family Medicine Residency Program and the Integrated Behavioral Health Director at the Waco Family Health Center. At a time when national public policy conversations are characterized by bitter partisanship and sharply divided polarization, come join Baylor Public Deliberation Initiative for a different kind of conversation, one that changes the public discourse and promotes community problem-solving. In this three-session workshop, you will learn about the deliberative model, participate in a public deliberation forum, and practice basic facilitation skills. You will also consider ways to actively use public deliberation to address current issues within your spheres of influence. A facilitation workbook is provided in the course cost. Please note that this is a prerequisite course for more advanced PDI courses.

Public Deliberation offers a framework for a different kind of conversation on community issues, one that changes the public discourse and promotes community problem-solving. In this one-session workshop, you will learn to focus on clearly naming the problem, laying out options for collective action, and creating materials to guide a deliberative forum. You will receive a free copy of "Developing Materials for Deliberative Forums," published by the Kettering Foundation. Prerequisite: Introduction to Public Deliberation or other prior knowledge of public deliberation.

Public Deliberation offers a framework for a different kind of conversation on community issues, one that changes the public discourse and promotes community problem-solving. In this one-session workshop, you will focuson  identifying your natural facilitation style and your personal assets as a facilitator, understanding how to guide the discussion without leading it, and navigating potential challenges as a moderator. You will learn how to ask good questions and how to listen and engage forum participants appropriately, and you will have the opportunity to practice facilitating and receive feedback on your facilitation skills. Prerequisite: Introduction to Public Deliberation or other prior knowledge of public deliberation.
